ABOUT THE OUTREACH COMMITTEE
The Outreach Committee’s overall goal is to support community interest and education in biotechnology, healthcare, and STEM while giving back to the community. To do this, we plan various events throughout the Champaign-Urbana area, both on the U of I campus and at local schools, community centers, libraries, and museums.
The Volunteering Team is a branch of BMES that supports the Outreach Committee by volunteering at our events and encouraging others to do the same. The team is open for UIUC BMES members to join at any time, and the sign-up can be found on the left! Service hours of this team are recorded, which is professionally beneficial to keep track of and puts members in the running for volunteering awards and prizes!
Our Initiatives
This annual high school outreach event is aimed at introducing students to the vast variety of careers a bioengineering student can have. This event includes speakers, lab visits, and a design challenge. Read an article about Bioengineer Your Impact here.
Our middle school program involves BMES going to a local middle school once a month to teach an introductory STEM lesson. Through engaging experiments and activities we teach the students about both engineering and biology.
We partner with other organizations on and off campus, such as the Orpheum Children's museum and the Society of Women Engineers, to collaborate and assist with their events.
We volunteer throughout the Champaign-Urbana community with our monthly volunteer events. Past events include volunteering for our annual campus day of service (iHelp) and going on the Salvation Army’s Canteen Run, where we ride in an ambulance to deliver food and other necessities to the less fortunate.
